Actress known as northern battleaxe Nora Batty in 'Last of the Summer Wine'
Kathy Staff, who died on 14 December, 2008, aged 80, was an icon of British comedy who will forever be remembered as Nora Batty, stalwart housewife and unfortunate object of the uncouth Compo's affections in Last of the Summer Wine.
With her wrinkled tights and broom often used as a weapon to shoo away the troublesome pensioner stars of the show, she played Nora from 1973 to 2008, an incredible 243 episodes.
She was also known for playing cleaner Doris Luke in the soap Crossroads (1978-85, and again in 2001) and another comedy housewife, the acid-tongued Mrs Blewitt in Open All Hours (1976-1981).
She was born Minnie Higginbottom on 12 July, 1928, and acted as Katherine Grant until marrying John Staff in 1951.
Despite being known for playing fearsome northern ladies, the Cheshire-born actress was known behind the scenes for being anything but a battleaxe.
Co-star Peter Sallis was terribly upset by the loss of an "irreplaceable" colleague.
He said: "She dominated anything that she was in. You could stop acting when Kathy was there because she was going to do it all for you..
"We don't know quite for sure whether we're going to do any more episodes, but if we do she's going to be terribly missed."
Mike Grady, (Barry), added: "She was blessed with a wonderful, quite formidable face, which I hope isn't disrespectful, but she knew it.
"What was good about her was that she was well aware of her work and what she could bring to a role.
"And she had that wonderful resonant voice, which was quite intimidating. She was actually a very sweet woman."
Last of the Summer Wine producer Alan Bell paid tribute to her saying: βShe would play a scene quite gently, and I'd say, 'But Kathy, you've got to harden up, because that's who we all love, the hard, tough Nora Batty.' And she said, 'Why can't I be just soft and gentle at times?' And I said, 'Maybe some time we will.'
"She was such a good lady, she was religious, she would never do anyone any harm. But above all that, she was thoroughly professional."
He added: βWe're distraught, but we have very fond memories of her.β

Angel Of Christmas Cheer
I hear a flutter in the breeze
There is snow upon the ground
All the leaves have fallen
Not a single one to be found.
So it makes me ponder
On this lovely winter day
Could it be an angel?
In the snow at play?
I go ahead and build my snowman
I work with cheerful hands

'Please wear a poppy', the lady said
and held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old, and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
A boy came wistling down the street,
Bouncing along, on care free feet
His smile was full of joy and fun,
'Lady', said he, 'May I have one?'
When she pinned it on, he turned to say,
'Why do we wear a poppy today?'
The lady smiled in her wistful way,
and answered, 'This is Rememberance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for,
the gallant men who died in war,
and because they died you and I are free--
Thats why we wear a poppy, you see'.
'I had a boy about your size,
with golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by, he learned and grew
and became a man--as you will, too.'
'He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
but he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away,
I still remember his face that day.
When he smiled at me and said'Good-bye,
I'll soon be back, mom, so please don't cry'.
'But the war went on and he had to stay,
and all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it in my dreams at night),
with the tanks and guns and cruel Barbed wire,
and the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.'
'Till at last the war was won-
and thats why we wear a poppy son'.
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said 'Thanks lady, i'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son-- did he come back alright?'
A tear rolled down each faded cheek;
she shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
and if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, is oft delayed,
though our freedome was bought-and thousands paid.
And so when we see a poppy worn, let us reflect on the burden borne
By those who gave their very all
and asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Then wear a poppy. Remember-- and give!
Lest we forget.
